Answering your most asked matcha questions!
Where does your matcha come from?
The Little Matcha Master's matcha is sourced from a small, dedicated farm in Nishio, Japan — a region celebrated for its mineral-rich soil, misty climate, and centuries of tea-growing tradition.
How can I tell good matcha from bad matcha?
The colour:
High-quality matcha should be a vibrant, almost electric green — never dull, yellowish, or brown. The vibrant green of matcha comes from it being a shade grown plant which is high in chlorophyll. If a matcha is a pale or khaki green, it is usually of a lesser quality because it either wasn't shade grown or is blended with something else.
The Ingredients:
If a matcha has any other ingredients other than 100% Matcha, it is a poorer quality matcha.
The Texture & Flavour:
It should have a fine texture (like baby powder), a natural, sweet smell, and a soft, creamy taste with no bitterness. If it’s harsh, gritty, or smells stale — it’s not high quality.
How should I store my matcha?
Store matcha in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Keep it away from heat, light, moisture, and strong odours. Always reseal well to preserve its vibrant colour and flavour.
Why is our matcha so expensive?
Matcha is labour-intensive to grow and process. The tea plants are shade-grown for weeks to boost chlorophyll and L-theanine. Only the youngest, most tender leaves are hand-picked on the 88th day of the lunar calendar, steamed, dried, deveined, and slowly stone-ground. It takes about an hour to grind just 30g of ceremonial matcha — every step is about quality, not speed.
We also import only the highest quality of matcha, which is naturally more expensive.
Does matcha contain caffeine?
Yes — Matcha contains a natural, mild form of caffeine. Thanks to its L-theanine content which boosts the body’s energy levels without the jittery feeling or crash. This aids in both mental alertness and focus, and physical energy, which means that matcha is not only great for everyday mental functioning, it also add a great boost to your workouts.
How long does matcha last?
Unopened, matcha can last up to a year. Once opened, we recommend using it within 2–3 months for peak freshness and flavour.
Can I cook or bake with matcha?
Yes! Culinary-grade matcha is perfect for recipes. You can add it to cakes, cookies, smoothies, or savoury dishes.
