How to make the perfect cup of Matcha
🍵 Making matcha is as much about the ritual as it is about the result. Slow down, savour the moment — and follow these simple steps:
You’ll Need:
- 1 tsp (about 1g) of ceremonial-grade matcha
- 80 ml of hot water (just below boiling, around 80°C / 176°F)
- AÂ matcha bowl (chawan)
- AÂ bamboo whisk (chasen)
- AÂ small sieve (optional, but helps prevent clumps)
Step-by-Step:
1. Heat the bowl
Place your matcha whisk in your matcha bowl and pour in a little hot water. After letting your matcha whisk soak for a minute or so, swirl, and discard — this warms the bowl and softens the bamboo whisk.

2. Add your matcha
Using a bamboo matcha scoop, place 2 sifted scoops (or 1 teaspoon) into a matcha bowl or cup.
TIP: We recommend using a fine sieve to sift the matcha. This helps create a smoother, frothier tea.

3. Add water
Pour 80 ml of hot (but not boiling) water over the sifted matcha.

4. Whisk
Using your chasen, whisk briskly in a “W” or zigzag motion until the tea is frothy and topped with a soft layer of foam — about 15–20 seconds.
5. Sip and savour
Enjoy immediately, ideally in silence or with intention. This is your moment of calm.
